The Writer’s Process; The 12 Writing Resolutions of 2012

Welcome to the year 2012! Well, we’re a month into it already, but I still want to welcome you into a year that might prove productive for your literary journey towards becoming published. Are you ready? If you’re not, then I have a solution: 12 steps to live by for the year. No, it’s not a weight loss program; it is something I feel a writer should always have in their repertoire…and of course, with me being me, it’s a little off the course of the main road the authorship.

Now, needless to say, if you are a writer who is trying to advance in your career, the primary objective is to write…everyday…all 366 days of 2012. Another objective is to learn from your everyday writing experience. It wouldn’t make sense to just scribble a few paragraphs on paper, and not know where to go from there. Think of writing as a contour line that started with the first words you ever wrote down on paper. With the love and respect you have for writing, there should be no breaking points. Each homework assignment, love letter, and résumé written should be a part of who you are, and what you represent in that contour line as you pursue your dreams of writing a novel. It’s all part of the process.

So, without further ado, I will present to you the 12 writing resolutions (in no particular order) you should take with you throughout the year to hone your skills, and to hopefully get you published. Remember, as eccentric as I am, don’t expect to find these points anywhere else, except here of course.

The Writer’s Process; Change of Plans

Stop the presses! There has been a change in plans! And as my muse takes me, there is no need in making any plans, because it flows randomly at times, and I never know where I end up. But I digress. My point is that the topic that was scheduled for this month’s Writer’s Process has taken another course. To where, you ask? I’m not sure, but you will be the first to know when I get there.

Actually this is a good time to talk about situations like this, where there’s a change of direction in your attempt to complete your novel. Sometimes a totally irrational thought can throw you off course, or a disruption in your life…or the dreaded writer’s block. Even the simplest change in a storyline can cause ripples throughout your entire novel. Things don’t always plan out the way you foresee it. There are so many obstacles to climb to ride a straight path to success. This is usually the time when you put the pen down or close the laptop, sulking in fits of discouragement. Here’s a plan: plan not to expect things to go as planned.

The Writer’s Process; Are you Ready for the Limelight?

by: Darryl Mims

I see you over there daydreaming. Wake up! Your journey is not over yet, but you are getting to that point of planning strategies to get your novel off the ground. I’m sure it looked like an easy ride in your daydream but, in reality, it’s difficult…especially if you’re not ready for the limelight.

Becoming an author brings with it all the aspects of being an entrepreneur and a celebrity. Once you put out that book, your hopes of becoming popular could exceed you. You’ll have to set your daily routine aside and get busy promoting your brand. You will be in demand, as you will be called upon to do interviews, speeches, book tours…etc. Are you ready for all of that? In that daydream you had, you were signing book after book, shaking hands, smiling and laughing with your readers who were throwing money at your feet. All you had to do was to sit back and drench yourself in overnight success…SMACK! You’re still daydreaming. Flex up and get ready for some hard work! The Writer’s Process; Don’t talk about it, Blog about it

Article written by: Darryl Mims

The process takes on another level this time around as you venture into putting the word out about the progression of your book. There are a lot of advertisements on the social media networks by writers on their journey into writing their first book. But, here’s a problem:

How many times have you seen a writer tweet or post on their Facebook page about the novel that they’re writing, what a great storyline it has, how the characters are so real that it gets them emotional just thinking about their roles in the story, and how exciting the climax will be…but in reality, the story has yet to develop.

Then, there’s the venting that goes with it; about how they have the dreaded writer’s block, how they’re stuck, and how they forgot to save a whole evening’s worth of writing and please will someone help me!

Too much talk and not enough writing. All that energy into talking about your book can be utilized properly. A good exercise in writing your book is to keep a blog. I’ve seen this practice being used more often by writers who use their blog as a daily journal, keeping track of their book’s progress. It’s not only a keen way to detail your work, but it is a good exercise in building layers to your story and developing your characters’ personalities. I have seen blogs entirely dedicated to the characters of a writer’s working novel…creating a world that surrounds the people that will generate the novel’s storyline. This is also a good way to interact with your future readers by holding a Q & A about your book…getting opinions from them on its progression. Invite them to follow your blog, where they can get updates on your journey into authorship. This not only helps build a following, but it also keeps your ideas from going stale.

Blogging about your work in progress is a more efficient, interactive, major stepping stone in your writing process. Use social media to direct people to your blog. Shouting into cyberspace about what you’re going to do is useless. People want results, not talk. Show them by blogging about it.
