A Defining Moment By Patricia Duncan

A Defining Moment is a 9×10 coffee table book that contains a collection of never before seen color photographs and historic speeches that provides an introspective look at the first African American President of the United States. Take another look at the events that led to a time in American History that will come to be known as A Defining Moment.

Get to Know Patricia:

1.What did then Senator Barack Obama say about health care in America on February 7, 2007?

“Let’s be the generation that finally tackles our health care crisis. We can control cost by focusing on prevention, by providing better treatment to the chronically ill, and using technology to cut the bureaucracy. Let’s be the one generation that says right here, right now that we will have universal health care in America by the end of the next president’s first term.”

2. How has the President kept us safe and the country strong during his presidency?

What was his vision as the presumptive Democratic nominee on June 3, 2008?

Change is realizing that meeting today’s threats requires not just our fire power, but the power of our diplomacy – tough direct diplomacy where the President of the US isn’t afraid to let any dictator know where America stands and what we stand for. The Obama administration has consistently kept the lines of communication open with world leaders. He and his Cabinet travel frequently throughout the United States and the rest of the world. Key members of Al Qaeda have been eliminated and several non-democratic nations have toppled under his watch.

3. Ted Kennedy made a prediction that Barack Obama would make changes, but how did he?

Ted Kennedy: “For me, this is a season of hope. New hope for a just and fair prosperity for the many and not just the few.
Increased minority access to capital
Established a credit card bill of rights preventing credit card companies from imposing arbitrary/rate increases on customers
Helped to get passage of a health care bill
Advocates the elimination of an unfair tax burden on the backs of the poor and middle class.

4. How does the First Lady and the President feel about military families?

The military families that say grace each night with an empty seat at the table, the servicemen and women who love this country so much, they leave those they love most to defend it.

That’s why he is running to end the war in Iraq responsibly, to build an economy that lifts every family, to make health care available for every American child and make sure every child in this nation gets a world class education all the way from pre-school to college.

Recently, President Obama announced the withdrawal of troops in Iraq by the end of the year which was a campaign promise that he made. In addition, Mrs. Obama has devoted a significant amount of her time working with military families.

5. Will the Democrats reward the Republican Party with four more years?

Now in spite of the evidence, their candidate is promising more of the same. More tax cuts for the wealthiest American that will swell the deficit, increase inequality and weaken the economy. More band aids for health care that will enrich insurance companies impoverish families and increase the number of impoverished families and increase the number of uninsured. More going it alone in the world instead of building the shared responsibilities and shared opportunities necessary to advance our security and restore and influence.

6. Are you better off today?

Like millions of Americans, they’re asking questions as profound as they are ordinary. Questions they never thought they would have to ask:

Should Mom move in with us now that Dad is gone?

Fifty, sixty, seventy dollars to fill up the car?

Winters coming. How are we going to pay the heating bills?

Another year and no raise?

Did you hear the company say that it would be cutting our health care?

Now, we owe more on the house than it’s worth.

How are we going to send the kids to college?

How are we going to retire?

That’s the America that George Bush has left us and that’s the future John McCain will give us. These are not isolated discussions among families down on their luck. These are common stories among middle class people who worked hard and played by the rules on the promise that their tomorrows would be better than their yesterdays.

7. What was the most difficult time during the creation of this book?

August, 2010 was one of the most difficult times of my life! My Mom was in hospice with lung cancer. I would go to hospice with my laptop and the pictures I needed to edit for the book. I would work on the photographs until my Mom wanted attention. I would put the laptop away and give her my undivided attention. After sitting with her for several hours, I would go home and work on pictures until the wee hours of the morning. This went on for a couple of weeks. On August 15th, I finished my part of the book, the integral part! I couldn’t wait to tell my mom! When I got to hospice, a friend of mine was waiting. I told her the exciting news. We went into my mom’s room and as always she gave me a smile. I sat on her bed and kissed her on her forehead. I said, “Momma, I finished my part of the book and now I can turn it over to the art director.” She said, “You did! You finally got it done? You’ve been working on it for a long time. Oh Tricia I am so proud of you!” She had this big grin on her face! Mom took a turn for the worse a few days later and went home on August 23rd, 2010.

Patricia (Pat)Duncan was born and raised inDenver,Coloradoand impresses everyone with her passion and commitment to her dreams.

Her first dream to be fulfilled was being a flight attendant with Braniff International Airways, for six wonderful years. After Braniff closed their gates in 1982,Duncanembarked on several careers including working with professional sport teams and Federal Express for 14 years.

In 2001, she formed her own event planning company IJABA, which means” A Wish Fulfilled”. She serves as Chief Executive Officer and President. Once again she developed another passion, photography. After purchasing a digital camera and photographing several events, Duncanrealized she had the talent to be a photographer. She left the ranks of being an amateur to becoming a professional freelance photographer. She is one of the contributing photographers for the Denver Weekly Newspaper and the Urban League of Metropolitan Denver.

Duncanrealizes following and achieving her dreams can be daunting tasks, so she embraces the words of her deceased sister, the honorableVikkiBuckley,Colorado’s first African American Secretary of State. “You have a dream and a goal, you must go after it! Stay focused; accept the good with the bad. You may get knocked back two steps before you can take one step forward, but don’t quit. If you work hard and keep God first in your life, you will persevere”.

Duncanis the proud mother of two adult daughters and resides inDenverwith her husband Kevin, a captain with the Denver Fire Department.

Africans are flamboyant with their narration.” Maybe we Americans can learn a few things from other cultures when it comes to writing.

First-time Author Salome W. Carter describes to us the difference in culture between her native country, Kenya, and the United States in the same detailed way she was told about her writing. Her colorful descriptions just come natural, and makes for great reading and listening. “It’s how our grandmothers told stories – they described every detail, dragged the story out and included all the theatricals along with it. I think it’s because we had enough time to ‘cross our feet by the fire’ and just enjoy the story. Americans are a little bit ‘get to the point’ kind of people and to a large extent have an audience that is becoming more and more distracted. I believe it’s a testament to the difference in cultures. Because I was writing for a broader audience, I tried my best to reach a pace compromised by accommodating both styles.”

He is an academic and athletic All-American at Crenshaw High in Los Angeles. On top of that, he’s attractive, popular, and most of all, madly in love with his beautiful girlfriend named Crystal Gayle. Until one horrific day, he catches Crystal in bed with another man and she breaks his heart. Right then, he vows never to fall in love again or give his heart to a woman.

Damien rescinds his baseball scholarship offer from USC and decides to attend the University of Miami instead. After a disappointing college baseball career, Damien’s best friend Mookie convinces him to relocate to Atlanta. Mookie schools Damien on the “starting five concept” and Damien never looks back. While in Atlanta, Damien is involved with a plethora of beautiful black women and never can seem to get enough. After many years, love eventually prevails. Damien finds himself trying to make the ultimate choice.

First, Crystal resurfaces when she relocates her medical practice from L.A. to Atlanta. She desperately wants to rekindle her love interest with Damien. Secondly, Diamond springs back into Damien’s life and has the ultimate surprise for him. Then there’s Nicole, who is married and miserable but wants Damien all to herself. She stops at nothing to accomplish this task. But Katrina, the sophisticated high profile corporate attorney, has other plans for Damien. She’s had everything in life, except a man, and now wants him as her “boy toy.” Finally, Tameka who is Diamond’s fake friend has a trick up her sleeve to combat them all.

Does love conquer all or will Damien continue to be just another ladies’ man?

I’ve been talking a lot lately to my author readers. I want to ask you a question, are you a predictable author? Can your readers read the next page before they turn it?

Sure you will say of course not. I’m a good author. Well, see that’s the thing. I didn’t ask you if you were good. I asked you if you were predictable. Difference.

The dictionary says that predictable means to say in advance (what one believes will happen) foretell. So again, authors are you predictable? You can find this out by reading or listening to what others say about your book. Has your book been reviewed? What do friends say about it? Surely by doing this, you can find the answer.

A friend may say I knew it was going to happen. I knew she would fall in love with him. Another person might say, I had a feeling this was taking place but I wasn’t sure. I could tell how the book was going.

Predictable. An Author may say no that’s not being predictable. That’s paying attention to detail. Ok you could say that but why would we want our readers to feel or think these things when they haven’t even gotten to the end of the book yet? The reason we or our books are so predictable is because there are millions of other books in our genre. We have to be different than so and so who writes in the same genre as us.
